The Short Version
What is chainwire fencing?
Chainwire - also called chainmesh or cyclone fencing - is a woven steel wire mesh strained between steel posts. It is the workhorse of commercial fencing: economical over long runs, hard-wearing, and open enough that a site stays visible and supervised.
The fence is built from galvanised steel line posts concreted into the ground, a top rail or tensioned top wire, and the mesh itself strained tight between end and corner assemblies. Tension is what separates a chainwire fence that stays straight for decades from one that sags in a couple of years, so the straining and tie-off work matters more than the material list.
It suits any boundary where the job is to define, secure and control a site rather than screen it: industrial yards, warehouses, plant and utility compounds, construction perimeters, school boundaries and sports enclosures. Because the mesh is open, it takes wind loading well, keeps sightlines clear for CCTV and supervision, and costs less per metre than solid or picket systems over long runs.
When another system suits better
If the fence is at the front of a site, needs to look sharp, or needs to resist climbing and cutting rather than simply define a boundary, steel security fencing is usually the better call.

50mm aperture, 2.5mm or 3.15mm wire
Chainmesh
The mesh does the containment. Standard commercial work is 50mm aperture galvanised wire; heavier 3.15mm wire goes in where the fence cops knocks or climbing. Tighter 25mm mesh is what stops fingers and toe-holds on high security sites.

Chainwire is not one product. These are the decisions that actually change how the fence performs, what it costs and how long it lasts - worth understanding before you compare quotes.
- Low boundary and delineation runs
- Enough to mark and control a boundary where security is not the main concern - common on rural, car park and internal divisions.
- Standard commercial boundary
- The usual choice for industrial yards, school boundaries and utility compounds - a genuine barrier that still keeps the site visible.
- High security and sports enclosures
- Taller runs for secure compounds, ball containment on courts and fields, and anywhere climbing is the risk you're designing against.
