The Short Version
What is steel security fencing?
Steel security fencing is a rigid, welded picket system: vertical steel pickets fixed through horizontal rails, hung between steel posts, and powder coated. It is the fence you use when a boundary has to be genuinely difficult to get over and still look like it belongs at the front of the property.
Unlike chainwire, it arrives as engineered panels rather than strained fabric, so the line is dead straight and the finish is consistent panel to panel. There is nothing to grip: the pickets are narrow and vertical, the rails sit inside the picket line, and there is no mesh to climb. That combination of appearance and climb resistance is why it dominates school boundaries, commercial frontages and public infrastructure.
The trade-off is cost per metre. Over a long back boundary of an industrial yard, chainwire does the same defensive job for less. Steel security earns its money where the fence is seen - street frontages, entries, school perimeters, carparks and public areas - or where climbing is the specific risk.
When another system suits better
If you're securing a long industrial boundary where appearance isn't the priority, chainwire will cover far more metres for the same budget.

Understanding your options
Two steel fences at the same height can behave very differently. These are the variables that decide security level, appearance and price.
The top of the picket sets both the security level and how the fence reads from the street.
- Spear top
- Pickets finished with a pointed spear above the top rail. The most climb-resistant of the common tops and the reason it's specified on secure commercial and infrastructure boundaries.
- Pressed spear
- The spear is pressed into the picket itself rather than added as a separate cast tip - a cleaner, more uniform look at a lower cost than decorative cast spears.
- Flat top
- Pickets finished level with or just above the top rail. Used where a pointed top isn't appropriate - many internal school and public areas - with height doing the security work instead.
